James Gunn Says Michael Rooker Deserves Oscar Nom for Guardians Vol. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is ‘far more powerfully emotional’ than the first one, says the writer/director.

We’re less than two months away from the release of one of 2017’s most highly anticipated films, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but we had a chance to speak with writer/director James Gunn, who’s making the press rounds for his new (and quite good) horror outing, The Belko Experiment, which he wrote and produced. Asked what will surprise fans the most about the Guardians’ second big-screen adventure, Gunn said:

“What will surprise them the most is that the emotion in the film. It’s a far more powerfully emotional film than the first film. I think they’re going to be surprised by Michael Rooker’s performance, who deserves an Academy Award nomination — no joke — for his role as Yondu. They’re going to be surprised by Pom Klementieff, who plays Mantis, and they’re going to be really surprised by how awesome Dave Bautista is in the film — who just kills it. I think those are probably the first things that people say about the film.”

We all know how awesome Michael Rooker is, and we don’t expect Gunn to do anything but praise his longtime muse, but an Oscar nomination? That’s throwing down a gauntlet. We’re also intrigued by what Gunn said about Bautista — his performance as Drax was one of the best surprises of the first film so it’ll be interesting to see how far he can push himself here.

We’ll have more from Gunn this week as The Belko Experiment arrives on March 17, and then hopefully even more when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 blasts into theaters on May 5.
