Marvel’s Moon Knight has never really been their most popular property, but he’s certainly stood the test of time on racks since the mid-1970s.
If you’re unfamiliar with the character, he’s been described in the past as “Batman with multiple personality disorder” and while that’s taking a very broad sweep at the background of erstwhile mercenary slash millionaire entrepreneur slash cab driver Marc Spector, it’s not a world away from the truth.
Born the son of a rabbi, Spector gets his powers after being left for dead on a mercenary mission near an archaeological dig in Egypt. Visited in a near-death vision by the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, Spector agrees to become his avatar on Earth in exchange for a second chance at life. Awakening to discover he now possesses strength, endurance, and reflexes far beyond that of a simple human, he later realizes that these powers are enhanced depending upon the phases of the moon.
Later, Spector develops a small fortune and takes on the identity of Steven Grant to move and shake with the higher-ups, while also becoming a part-time cabbie called Jake Lockley so he can keep his eye on the shady activities happening at street level.
I mean, it sounds pretty cool, right? So why wouldn’t someone like Guardians Of The Galaxy‘s James Gunn be itching to get involved? Recently replying to a fan on Twitter, Gunn revealed he’s a huge fan of the character and that he’s got a “great idea” for a Moon Knight movie, but unfortunately he doesn’t have the time to get involved with it right now – which doesn’t rule out the possibility of him tinkering with it in the future:— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) January 4, 2017
Troma vet Gunn also stated he doesn’t think Moon Knight is right for the Guardians universe and we would concur.
Still, we’d very much like to hear about the director’s vision for Moon Knight. Maybe somewhere down the line, Marvel will find a place for him in their calendar…
