In the Shadow of the Moon, an upcoming Netflix film, has something to offer to fans of macabre late-20th-century-set crime dramas like the streamer’s David Fincher-developed Mindhunter as well as fans of grittier sci-fi genre offerings like director Rian Johnson’s Looper.
Headlined by rising star Boyd Holbrook, crime drama icon Michael C. Hall and prospective breakout Cleopatra Coleman, the film appears unconcerned with genre boundaries, set in Philadelphia in 1988, showcasing the story of a cop (Holbrook) whose seemingly supernatural encounter with a woman suspected of being a serial killer leads him down the rabbit hole of time travel when she resurfaces in the wake of new killings.
Jim Mickle, creator of SundanceTV’s Hap and Leonard, directed the film working off a script by the duo of Geoffrey Tock and Gregory Weidman (Zoo, Limitless).

In the Shadow of the Moon Details
As the official synopsis for In the Shadow of the Moon reads:
In 1988, Philadelphia police officer Thomas Lockhart (Boyd Holbrook), hungry to become a detective, begins tracking a serial killer who mysteriously resurfaces every nine years. But when the killer’s crimes begin to defy all scientific explanation, Lock’s obsession with finding the truth threatens to destroy his career, his family, and possibly his sanity. Directed by Jim Mickle and also starring Michael C. Hall and Cleopatra Coleman, IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON is a genre-blending psychological thriller that examines the power of time, and how its passing can either bring us together or tear us apart.
Boyd Holbrook stars in the film, riding momentum from recent high-profile projects like his starring role in 2018 franchise revival The Predator, and as a villain opposite Hugh Jackman in 2017’s Logan, along with a TV run on the first two seasons of Netflix’s Narcos.
Michael C. Hall, star of the beloved Showtime crime drama, Dexter, recently put in performances for Netflix on its 2018 mystery series, Safe, and, in a one-off, played President John F. Kennedy on The Crown.
Cleopatra Coleman rounds out the main trio. The up-and-coming Aussie actress fielded a run on Fox’s The Last Man on Earth, and was recently seen in Showtime series Now Apocalypse, as well as Showtime comedy series White Famous.
