Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the pair behind the first two Harold & Kumar movies, have their latest film, American Pie: The Reunion, heading to cinemas in the weeks ahead. And so pleased is Universal with the work that the pair have done, that it’s entered into a new two-year deal with them. The studio is keen for more movies, clearly.
Chatting to Moviehole, then, the pair have since revealed what their dream project might just be, saying “we want Back To The Future”.
Now, before the Internet melts, this isn’t any hint of a new Back To The Future film. Instead, the pair admit it’s their favourite trilogy of films, and that it’s influenced both the new American Pie film, and the earlier Harold & Kumar movies. Plus, they’ve an interesting thought on the inevitability of the films being remade at some point in the future.
Schlossberg added that “I wouldn’t want to do it now because people would be like, ‘Oh, there’s no way it will be as good as the original.’ But 30 years from now when Spielberg’s like 90 and those guys are kind of on their way out, and those movies just look really old because we’re watching movies that are old, literally in two dimensions or something, it would be great to have all these classics that you’re able to remake.”
Whilst admitting his favour for sequels over remakes, he also argued that “The problem is [the sequel is set in] 2015, that’s why I feel it is inevitably going to be remade because it is dependent on time periods that people won’t connect with. It’s the perfect movie to remake, but it’s so loved by a generation that is still with it and going to be with it.”
We’ll keep you posted on what project Hurwitz & Schlossberg do end up attached to…
