It was probably inevitable that sooner or later we would get an entire film done in the first-person—or more explicitly “first-person-shooter”—perspective. As a common vantage point for video game fanatics ever since the early days of Doom and GoldenEye (N64, not the movie), this stylized version of action has crept into movies both good (Kick-Ass) and bad (Doom, not the game). But with Hardcore Henry, the premise of a wall-to-wall adrenaline experience has been receiving positive enthusiasm ever since it blew the doors off of Midnight Madness during the Toronto International Film Festival.
In the below and final Hardcore Henry trailer, STX Entertainment’s action-adventure experiment showcases more of director Ilya Naishuller’s twisted vision of what happens when a mute, cybernetic superhuman who is part RoboCop and part audience cipher wakes up to find his wife and technological savior (Haley Bennett) has been kidnapped by evil Russians. Sharlto Copley and Tim Roth are also bound to make guest appearances, but the star is the action, which admittedly looks pretty slick in the below footage.
Hardcore Henry will screen at SXSW on Sunday March 13 at 9:30pm at the Paramount Theatre; the film opens in theaters nationwide on April 8, 2016.
