For a multi-billion-dollar franchise, the Transformers series has played it relatively safe up to this point when it comes to shared fictional universes. With a Bumblebee-centric spinoff planned, that is set to change and Paramount may have just made a great choice when it comes to casting its lead.
According to Variety, Paramount is “in talks” with Hailee Steinfeld (Edge of Seventeen, Pitch Perfect 2) to star in the Bumblebee spinoff focused on the yellow-and-black-striped Autobot. The film has already secured Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight to helm the project behind-the-scenes. If they get Steinfeld, this Transformers spinoff is getting dangerously close to promising — something that can’t often be said (narratively) about this franchise.
Who will Steinfeld play, should she take the role? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Steinfeld “a tomboy who also holds a job as a mechanic after school.” Between this description and Transformers: The Last Knight, the franchise is seemingly doubling down on the tomboy front. The upcoming movie stars Isabela Moner as Izabella, a street-smart tomboy who was orphaned during the Chicago War.
The Transformers spinoff is set to be a lower-cost installment for the franchise. It was written by Christina Hodson (who will also pen Warner Bros./DC’s Birds of Prey), and came out of the Transformers writers room — another encouraging sign.
Bumblebee is slated to open in theaters on June 8, 2018.
