Gwyneth Paltrow Teases Pepper’s Avengers: Infinity War Role

Start coming up with your Rescue theories now. You know we have...

While we’ve known for a while that Gwyneth Paltrow would return as Pepper Potts for Avengers: Infinity War, it has been unclear what kind of role she might play in these crowded films. The actress was on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night to talk about her lifestyle brand. While there, self-described nerd Colbert got some Infinity War clues out of her…

“I am, I am. I’m in them!” Paltrow exclaimed after Colbert straight-up asked. The last time we saw Pepper was in Spider-Man: Homecoming (in one of my personal favorite surprise cameos), showing that she and Tony were back together following their difficulties during Civil War.

As for what role Pepper might be playing as part of the films’ super team, Colbert asked Paltrow if her character would have powers, to which Paltrow responded…

You know, to be totally honest, I’m unclear. Because it’s so secretive and it’s all on green screen, and I’m not exactly sure. And they don’t let me say anything.

Intrepid reporter Colbert continued, asking: “Is there any chance, at any point, when you were working on the movie, did you thrust your hand toward someone wearing a blue suit with ping pong balls on it?”

“Yes,” said Paltrow, which, at least to Colbert means Pepper still has powers. More likely, however, Pepper will be wearing the Iron Man armor, which we saw her do at points in Iron Man 3. She did get powers in that same film after being exposed to Extremis, but she was “cured” of that by the end of the film.

There have been some theories floating around the internet that Pepper may assume the Rescue alter-ego, which Pepper has in the comics. Rescue is the superhero version of Pepper (though running Stark Industries and being in a committed relationship with Tony probably also require some kind of superpower), who fights alongside Tony in her own specially-designed armor.

Personally, I would love to see Pepper take more of a role in these films. If this is to be the end of an MCU era, then it seems important that one of the characters who started it all be a vital part of the send-off.
