It’s no surprise to learn that Marvel will definitely press ahead with Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3. As the release of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 looms in early May, discussions about a third film have been confirmed by writer/director James Gunn. But Gunn himself might not be back to direct it.
Speaking with Complex, Gunn said, “There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out.” But he added: “I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.”
Can we perhaps let the guy catch his breath for a minute? Gunn is still putting the finishing touches on Guardians 2, is probably exhausted (he’s also out promoting the new horror film he’s written and produced, The Belko Experiment), and the last thing he wants to think about in all likelihood is doing it all again in a relatively short amount of time.
While he, more than any other Marvel filmmaker, has put his own personal stamp on the Guardians franchise, spending several more years of his life with the same characters just might not be where his head is at right now (shades of Daniel Craig being asked about a fifth Bond film practically days after finishing work on Spectre).
Of course there will be a Guardians 3, unless somehow the second one fails spectacularly at the box office (which is not bloody likely). When Marvel announces Guardians 3, it will probably be part of the yet-to-be-unveiled Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is several years away. So let’s relax, enjoy the hell out of Guardians 2, and wait a minute or two before we talk about the sequel.
