Godzilla Director Gareth Edwards to Helm Star Wars Spin-Off

The first details about the Star Wars spin-off films are starting to emerge, and Godzilla's Gareth Edwards will direct.

With Godzilla winning the hearts of fans and critics, Gareth Edwards is making quite a splash these days. Is it possible to get bigger than Godzilla? It might be. Especially if you’re talking about Star Wars. And now comes the news that Gareth Edwards will direct the first of the Star Wars spin-off films, from a script by Gary Whitta (The Book of EliAfter Earth).

“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm,” said Edwards in a statement on the official Star Wars site.

Gary Whitta said: “From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth, is literally a dream come true. I’m still pinching myself.”

Disney is apparently looking to apply the Marvel model to their Star Wars franchise, releasing stand-alone films to fill the gaps between the core Star Wars saga movies. The untitled Star Wars spin-off will arrive in theaters on December 16th, 2016, almost exactly one year after Star Wars: Episode VII, which should allow some breathing room before they have to get Star Wars: Episode VIII ready to roll.

The Hollywood Reporter points out that Edwards is still attached to direct both Godzilla 2 and Godzilla 3, but both projects are in such early stages of development that virtually anything could happen. However, Legendary CEO Thomas Tull doesn’t think this will change their plans.

“Gareth’s filmmaking talent makes him one of his generation’s most creative and visionary directors. The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another Godzilla, but who knew it would a Star Wars installment? We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth’s imprint on the Star Wars universe.”

As for what this first Star Wars stand-alone movie might be? Our money is on Boba Fett…
