It’s hard to believe that its been 35 years since Ghostbusters first hit theaters, but that’s what the internet tells me. In celebration of this auspicious occasion, Fathom Events is hosting special screenings around the country. The event will take place on Sunday, October 6, and Thursday, October 10, and tickets are already available for purchase at the event website.
In addition to the film itself, the screenings will feature a special introduction that reunites “key members” of the film, which, as you may know, stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson as a group of paranormal investigators who get into the business of ridding haunted buildings of troublesome spirits. In the process, they are asked to save the world.
The film was written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, and produced and directed by Ivan Reitman. It also stars Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts, and William Atherton. The screenings will feature some rarely-seen alternate takes from the blockbuster comedy.
“‘Ghostbusters’ is a comedy legend and a movie legend, a movie whose immediate success has been followed by decades of fervent fan appreciation,” said Fathom Events Vice President of Studio Relations Tom Lucas. “There’s never been a comedy quite like it, and maybe never will be again, and Fathom Events is delighted to bring ‘Ghostbusters’ back to the big screen for longtime fans to enjoy again and new audiences to discover for the first time.”
In general, these nostalgia-friendly events are always a lot of fun, giving longtime fans and new watchers alike the chance to see movies they may never before had the chance to watch on the big screen. Ghostbusters originally hit theaters in 1984, which means a sizable portion of the potential movie-goers for this event may not have been around or old enough to check it out the first time it was in theaters.
Ghostbusters was number one at the box office when it opened on June 8, 1984. It stayed in theaters for 30 weeks, went on to garner two Oscar nominations, and saw its theme song hit number one on the Billboard Top 100.
This time, Ghostbusters will be screened in more than 600 movie theaters nationwide, at 4pm and 7pm local time on both October 6th and October 10th… just in time to welcome in the Halloween season.
