Geek shows and movies on UK TV in the coming week

Hustle departs, Modern Family season 2 starts in the UK, there's Community, The Walking Dead, 30 Rock and Kevin Costner. It's our UK TV look-ahead...!

Timecrimes

We wave goodbye to a too short run of a favourite show and welcome back some older programming for a return visit to our TV sets over the next seven days in tellyland.

It feels like it just began, but Hustle series 7 ends tonight, Friday, February 18th at 9:00pm on BBC1. Albert is featured heavily, and worries are pressing weightily on the eldest of the group of cons with hearts. The series finale sees them helping a pal who’s rubbed the Mafia the wrong way. We wouldn’t rub the Mafia at all, frankly. But the damage has been done and we’ll see if the Hustle crew can make repairs. We’ll have a review of the finale as soon as possible.

If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting the Modern Family, the second season of this always entertaining American sitcom starts again on Sky1, Monday, February 21st at 11:00am and, like most all shows on the channel, you’ll have ample opportunity to catch the first episode, The Old Wagon and commiserate as the Dunphys share a common emotional tug, letting go of the family’s first car and all the memories crammed under seats and into compartments. Episode 2, The Kiss, follows at 11:30am.

An equally reliable import, Community is currently running on Viva, an MTV channel that features shows that, let’s just say, aren’t Community or in its class. Unfortunately, most sources of scheduling leave off useful details such as which episode of the community college sitcom is actually airing, so it’s a bit of pot luck, and you have to stay up pretty late to even catch a glimpse without a PVR service or equipment, as the show airs at 1:30am. It’s well worth the effort and lost sleep to track it down, though, and it’s next shown on Tuesday, February 22nd (on Freeview 21, Sky 357, and Virgin Media 313). Our hope is that it finds a following on these shores that will help it settle down in a more friendly, fitting neighbourhood and timeslot in which to thrive. You can catch up with reviews and share your thoughts here.

You have a second chance to watch The Walking Dead, the comic book-based zombie series, on FX, starting Wednesday, Februrary 23rd at 10:00pm. The first episode, Days Gone By, is a good indicator of how different this is to your average show, and with 2008’s Dead Set, it’s one of too few opportunities to see some good undead action outside of films, comics or videogames. Catch the animated corpses in all their rotting glory one more time in the first of six episodes, before the long wait for a second season. Our reviews from its first outing are here.

Provided your sensitive ears can handle the onslaught, the brilliant political comedy, The Thick of It, returns in its third series on Gold at 10:40pm, Wednesday, February 23rd, with the first of eight episodes. There’s been a shuffle of faces in the Cabinet, but expletive barking Malcolm Tucker is still the man to take charge, and make underlings and equals alike tremble uncontrollably. Series 3 episode reviews can be found here.

Lastly, although it’s not finishing or starting a new season, we’ll happily report that Thursday, February 24th brings us a special episode of 30 Rock‘s fifth season at 10:30pm on Comedy Central, in a hybrid combination of the east and west coast versions of the Live Show broadcasts from October 2010. We have a review of one coast here, but feel it’s worth a gander at what this combined effort looks like, and there’s always the fun of spotting missed cues and flubbed lines, which we’d easily forgive in a show of this calibre trying as fresh an approach as possible. (And it brought back Jon Hamm as Dr. Drew Baird, so we’re there!)

Now, on to those films showing through the weekend and a bit beyond. All the Alien films (before they started taking on Predators) are up for grabs. There are a duo of fine Kevin Costner films in Field Of Dreams and the quite brilliant Untouchables. If that’s not enough, there are two Kubrick classics in A Clockwork Orange and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

As always, if we missed anything interesting, have a shout in the comments, with our thanks.
