Geek shows and movies on UK TV in the coming week

Friday Night Dinner starts on Channel 4, while Mad Dogs and Marchlands come to an end. Plus lots of films, in our UK TV preview...

The Untouchables

We suppose it’s fitting, with the Academy Awards airing Sunday, that TV shows should take a back seat and movies should drive the week.

There’s only one lone newcomer braving the next seven days of movie mania highway by premiering tonight, Friday, February 25th at 10:00pm. Fans of The Inbetweeners can catch Will (Simon Bird), this time as Adam, one of two sons in the Goodman family in Friday Night Dinner on Channel 4. The first episode is entitled The Sofabed, with Tamsin Geig, as Mum, playing a decidedly different role to her recent work in Episodes (which we reviewed here), and the rest of the cast round out what could be a nice plate of laughs on Friday nights. Well, for six Friday nights, at least.

Then it’s a quite quiet week, programme-wise, until Thursday, when two shows take the exit ramp off the telly schedules.

We came for the cast, but we stayed for the story and we’re anxious to know what happens to holidaymakers, Max Beesley, Philip Glenister, John Simm and Marc Warren on their ill-fated villa visit to old friend, Alvo, who’s received the worst of the bad luck in Mad Dogs. We’ve been following the lads’ story here, and we’ll be tuning in on Thursday, March 3rd at 9:00pm to Sky1, to find out their fate and whether they can remain friends through the nightmares they’ve faced.

If your Thursdays have been spent following the ghost story of Marchlands, rather than the plight of mates on a holiday gone woefully wrong, you’ll want to reserve Thursday, March 3rd at 9:00pm for ITV1 instead, to catch the finale and have some mysteries solved. The threads of three families’ lives have unravelled over a child’s grave and we may learn what became of Alice and achieve peace in the households of all she’s held in her grip these past weeks. Prior reviews are here, if you need to catch up, and we’ll have the finale of this and Mad Dogs soon after they air.

Now, on to those films showing through the weekend and a bit beyond. This week, in addition to award-winning films, there’s a flurry of Bruce Lee flicks, more Kevin Costner, adding Tin Cup to the collection, and some fine choices to share with the youngest geeks-in-training.

As always, if we missed anything interesting, have a shout in the comments, with our thanks.
