Geek shows and movies on UK TV in the coming week

Frankenstein's Wedding! Becoming Human! Spartacus: Gods Of The Arena! V! And lots and lots of movies on UK TV in the coming week...

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

For those who wouldn’t mind another twist to their old, wrung out horror stories, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, a tale fast approaching two centuries’ worth of retellings, gets a fresh treatment on Saturday, March 19th on BBC3 in Frankenstein’s Wedding… Live in Leeds. The programme, co-starring Lacey Turner, who recently guest-starred in a pivotal role as Lia in the third season of Being Human, also features David Harewood and Andrew Gower in a dramatic, modern-day musical event performed and broadcast live at 8:00pm.

Another Being Human connection follows on Sunday, March 20th at 9:00pm, when BBC3 will broadcast the entirety of the web episodes and finale of the spin-off, Becoming Human. Craig Roberts, currently starring in Richard Ayoade’s 5-star film, Submarine, which we reviewed here, reprises his role of Adam, as seen in season 3’s Adam’s Family. It’s a school-set comedy-drama, rather than the B&B, where Adam tries to solve the mysterious death of a classmate, another supernatural in the form of a ghost, who can’t quite think why he’s sticking around, unless his unfinished business is A-levels or making it past season 3 of Lost. We’re wondering if any clues will be found about the possible future cast of Being Human, as we wrote about here, now officially announced to have achieved a fourth series.

To start a new telly week in the most violent way possible, Spartacus: Gods Of The Arena, the prequel to Blood And Sand, launches on Sky1 at 10:00pm on Monday, March 21st. The first of six episodes is called Past Transgressions, and judging by the reviews and viewer comments, (reviews of the full series are here), we imagine there’s a very long list of those for almost all the characters. Now that the show’s reached our shores, you can join in the comments and add your opinions to episode reviews.

Bringing up the rear of the week, rebooted sci-fi series V returns with its second season run on Thursday, March 24th at 9:00pm on Syfy. The first of 10 episodes, Red Rain, sees the Fifth Column attempt to gain some control against the Visitors, and an original series star makes a welcome entrance. The series may be a slow boiler, but the finale was a real show-stopper, and worth the wait, according to fans who’ve seen it. We have a review of the finale here. But to start at the beginning of the season, and add your own praise or damnation, Red Rain is reviewed here.

Now, on to those films showing through the weekend and a bit beyond. As always, if we missed anything interesting, have a shout in the comments, with our thanks.
