Geek shows and movies on UK TV in the coming week

The Killing and Wonders Of The Universe come to an end, Frank Skinner's Opinionated returns, there's the big Clone Wars finale, and Bored To Death comes to the UK. Plus: movies!

Alfred Hitchcock's Rope (1948)

Returning for a second series is Frank Skinner’s Opinionated, airing tonight, Friday, March 25th at 10:00pm on BBC2. We enjoyed the first series, which saw two guest comedians per week join Frank on couches in front of studio audiences to discuss the week’s goings-on. Another sofa set of episodes is certainly welcome in our front rooms.

Then, three series wrap up this week. The first was a brief, but enjoyable four episodes of Wonders Of The Universe, which concludes on Sunday, March 27th at 9:00pm on BBC2 with, Messengers. We have reviews of the series here, and hope to have the finale covered soon.

The other departing show had many more parts, twenty, in fact, to tell the story of one main mystery in The Killing. We regret not knowing about this show to tell you at the beginning, but for those who managed to find the all but hidden series, it’s been a real treat. The fact that the programme has taken so long for a resolution to be revealed doesn’t seem to matter much. (I suspect I even guessed both the killer’s identity and the place it occurred from the first double episodes, something that would ordinarily irk me to no end. But I’m not a bit bothered by that!) Even the political subplot is easily tolerable when the performances and writing are as good as they are here. The final two episodes will be shown on BBC4 Saturday, March 26th at 9:00 and 10:00pm. We promise here and now to try our best to let you know if the series airs again, in time to tune in from episode one.

Also departing a bit earlier in the day on Saturday, March 26th is Star Wars: The Clone Wars, with a finale that’s sure to be appreciated by all Star Wars fans. Wookiee Hunt, the final episode of season three, airs first on Sky Premiere at 10:00am. You can catch up with the season’s reviews here, and stop back on Saturday for a review of the finale. We’d love to hear what you think of what has been the best of the series so far.

Although the viewership will be limited, we’ll make another exception to mention a Sky Atlantic debuting show, as we plan to review episodes of Bored To Death soon after they air. The show, which originally aired on HBO, stars Jason Schwartzman as Jonathan Ames, a not entirely successful New York writer who sidelines in detective work to supplement his income and fill his story well. Co-starring as his best friend, Ray, a comic book creator with a troubled relationship, is Zach Galifianakis. Ted Danson plays a pot-smoking, Viagra-popping old school magazine editor, George Christopher, in a role far removed from Sam in Cheers. It’s not a laugh-out-loud comedy, but of the new sort that tends to grow on you and worm its way into your telly viewing schedule through a great cast and outlandish situations. It premieres on Monday, March 28th at 10:00pm, with episode one, Stockholm Syndrome.

Now, on to those films showing through the weekend and a bit beyond. This week there’s a run on Rocky films, from the very start in our number one sports film right up to Rocky IV, among other great movies in the next seven days. As always, if we missed anything interesting, have a shout in the comments, with our thanks.
