Well, this feels unusual. In an era of cinematic universes and sequels that only stop when the box office takings dry up, we’ve got a filmmaker who reckons that their film needs one sequel, and that’s it. That filmmaker is director Doug Liman, and that sequel will be Edge Of Tomorrow 2.
“I see this as a two-movie franchise,” he declared, noting that it’ll round off the story set up in the first film, and that it’ll pick up immediately following the ending of the first Edge Of Tomorrow. No spoilers to that ending here, save to say there’s a very natural pick-up.
The sequel will feature Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt returning, but Liman also revealed in an interview with MTV that he’s going against convention for his follow-up. He explained, “I think what people tend to do with sequels is they just make them bigger. And I’m like ‘no, a sequel should be smaller.’
“You did the first film as sort of the ad campaign for the sequel, so now you don’t need as much action, and in the case of Edge Of Tomorrow, people obviously loved the comedy and they loved the situation,” he continued. “So we can do way more focus on Tom’s character and Emily Blunt’s character, and there’s a third character in the sequel that’s going for sure steal the movie…I don’t need an action sequence every two minutes.”
Liman didn’t expand on who would be playing the third character, or give further details about it. That information will follow in due course. It’s also not clear if Liman intends to stick with the title he recently revealed in another interview: Live Die Repeat and Repeat.
Tom Cruise still has Mission: Impossible 6 to finish, and it’s also more than likely that Edge of Tomorrow 2 will have to get in line after Top Gun 2 for the actor’s attention. Our best guess? Look for Edge Of Tomorrow 2 to start filming next year — but don’t hold us to it.
