Deadpool, X-Men, Alien, Avatar, The X-Files and The Simpsons all have a new home at Disney. The mouse house’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox is finally complete, ending two long years of crossing the legal and regulatory Ts and dotting the ….lower case Js.
21st Century Fox announced the news officially today as Disney finalized the details of its $71.3 billion payout fantasia (no pun intended).
The simple announcement “The Walt Disney Company’s (“Disney”) acquisition of 21CF will become effective at 12:02 a.m. Eastern Time tomorrow, March 20, 2019” will likely lead to a broad amount of news on plans going forward from tomorrow, but most of the current chatter online centres around which Marvel characters might now join the MCU, and whether Deadpool will stay filthy.
CEO Bob Iger has hinted that Disney would more than likely want to keep Wade Wilson in the R-rated arena, and Kevin Feige has confirmed that he doesn’t plan to use any of Fox’s former Marvel characters for at least the next six months, so hopefully that answers both those questions for now.
Meanwhile, Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds, seemed fairly upbeat about the Disney-FOX merger, posting this reaction online earlier…
Most of Fox’s plans for the future of its properties have been in flux since the first steps towards a deal were made, with those in charge unable to comment on what will happen next until the acquisition went through. Hopefully, there’ll be a clearer picture of what we can expect, but you can bet that Disney+ subscriptions will be near-compulsory when the company launches its streaming service soon, with an envious catalogue now at its fingertips.
Indeed, if you thought that Disney was all-powerful before, prepare to witness the eye-watering box office domination set to occur now that Fox has joined Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm in its embrace. It is going to be quite the ride.
