It’s not controversial to say that the Marvel Cinematic Universe leaves a bit to be desired in the villains department. With a few notable exceptions (looking at you, Hiddleston), almost through Phase 3, the MCU has featured fill-in-the-blank baddies that are essentially forgettable once the credits have rolled. With the casting of Josh Brolin as Thanos, Marvel seemed to be signaling that there would be more of a focus on the rogues gallery moving forward. That trend looks to continue, with Variety reporting that Ben Mendelsohn has been tapped to star as the antagonist in the upcoming Captain Marvel film.
Mendelsohn is an inspired, if not surprising choice, considering that Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck worked with Mendelsohn in their last feature, Mississippi Grind. Mendelsohn is a captivating screen presence and accomplished villain, appearing in stand-out bad guy roles in The Dark Knight Rises and Star Wars: Rogue One. If he hasn’t cemented his place as Hollywood’s go-to adversary, he will after his next roles in Ready Player One and as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood. (Mendelsohn was also originally attached to play Pennywise in this summer’s IT.)
Details on Captain Marvel are still a bit scarce at the moment, but it has been revealed by Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige that Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers will be squaring off against the Skrull. There have been plenty of menacing, powerful Skrull warriors in the pages of Marvel Comics, so you better believe will be combing through old books to pinpoint exactly which character Mendelsohn will embody.
It’s also been floated recently that Captain Marvel will tie directly into the events of Avengers 4, so there’s a chance that Mendelsohn could be sticking around in the MCU for longer than one film. I guess we will have to wait until March 8, 2019, when the film premieres, to know for sure.
