Batman secretly George Bush..?

Did you love The Dark Knight? We'll put you down as a Bush supporter then...[DARK KNIGHT SPOILERS]

Our hero.

The Wall Street journal has set off a fair brush-fire of reaction on the web by comparing Batman’s portrayal in The Dark Knight to George W. Bush. Referring to the film’s ending where [SPOILER!] Batman decides to take responsibility for the chaos caused by Harvey Dent so that the people of Gotham do not lose faith in their ideals, Andrew Klavan writes…

…when our artistic community is ready to show that sometimes men must kill in order to preserve life; that sometimes they must violate their values in order to maintain those values; and that while movie stars may strut in the bright light of our adulation for pretending to be heroes, true heroes often must slink in the shadows, slump-shouldered and despised — then and only then will we be able to pay President Bush his due and make good and true films about the war on terror.

The AV Club’s Amelie Gillette wrote in response to the article:

[As for] Batman sidestepping civil rights, and dealing with terrorists according to a different standard, I would say that the main difference between Batman and Bush in those cases is that one of them is a leather-clad vigilante superhero, and the other one is the President of the United States. Batman never swore to uphold any laws. Bush did. When a guy in a cape has his manservant wiretap a city to catch an evil clown, that’s vastly different than when a president sidesteps the laws he’s supposed to be upholding.

Answering comments on the Wall Street Journal web-site itself include one from a ‘guest calling himself Stanley Wisniewski:

As Batman knew how to recognize evil so has President Bush. As Batman threw all his available resources against the Joker so has President Bush used all the available resources of the United Staes against Islamo-facism. And despite the fact that Batman and President Bush are both vilified as evil they both are true heroes. Indeed President Bush may well deserve to be remembered in history as the “Dark Knight”

Another comment from ‘John Doe’ notes:

While I tend to interpret this film, and Batman Begins as conservative, google searching has shown that left wingers tend o see their own viewpoints represented. In my opinion, that is the mark of a good film.

Hmmm. Or could it be as I suggested, that Nolan was determined that his film would play in all states..?

Anyway, there you have it. If you love Batman in The Dark Knight, you’re pro-Bush, even if you don’t know it yet. Discuss.
