Avatar Sequels Recruit Vin Diesel for Mystery Role

From Fast & Furious to Blue & Curious, as Vin Diesel climbs aboard the Avatar franchise.

Remember when Vin Diesel was suddenly cast in James Gunn’s Guardians Of The Galaxy and we were like “what!” and then it turned out his literal only job was to say “I am Groot” the entire time? It may well be time for a dizzying spell of déjà vu.

Diesel has announced this week via his own Instagram account that he is joining the Avatar sequels in a currently-undisclosed role. The Fast & Furious actor described feeling hashtag blessed and hashtag grateful to get a chance to take part in the upcoming Pandora franchise adventures, which are all being helmed by returning director James Cameron.

“Okay, so here we are on the set of Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5. This is top secret, this is like the Manhattan Project, with my old buddy Vin, and we’re actually going to give him the flashy thing from Men In Black when he leaves here so he has no memory whatsoever of what he’s seen cause he can not carry the tale,” jokes Cameron in the set video.

Diesel adds with a grin “There is one person in Hollywood I’ve always wanted to work with and learn from. Where is he?”

So, will Vin have plenty to say when we finally get to clap our eyes on these long-in-gestation Avatar sequels? Or will he be mo-capped as some kind of weird mystical flower that somehow gives the Na’vi time-bending powers or summat? Place your bets!

Diesel joins Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Winslet and David Thewlis in Avatar 2, which will arrive in cinemas on December 18th, 2020. Cameron is attempting the unprecedented cinematic feat of producing all four sequels in tandem. The esteemed director brought in Josh Friedman (Spielberg’s War Of The WorldsTerminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes), and Shane Salerno (Armageddon) to help work on the scripts for the sequels.
