Avatar Sequels Gain Actor Cliff Curtis

The Fear the Walking Dead star gets on board the next ship to Pandora.

Cliff Curtis has joined the cast of the upcoming sequels to Avatar, according to Deadline. The New Zealand native will appear in all four of the follow-ups and will play Tonowari, a leader of the reef people clan known as the Metkayina. This lines up with director James Cameron saying many times that a great deal of the sequels would take place in and around the planet Pandora’s oceans.

Original Avatar cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver are already on board for the films, which will begin shooting in Wellington, New Zealand next year. The first sequel is due out on December 18, 2020, with the other three coming in 2021, 2024 and 2025.

Curtis plays former English teacher Travis Manawa on Fear the Walking Dead, which will kick off its third season on AMC on June 4 and has already been renewed for a fourth. The Avatar production schedule will apparently work around Curtis’ commitments to the series.

His previous films include Once Were Warriors, Deep Rising, Virus, Three Kings, Bringing Out the Dead, Training Day, The Fountain and many others, although this will probably be his first time as a blue cat-man…
