Amityville: The Awakening Comes to Google Play for Free

The long belated release of Amityville: The Awakening, with Bella Thorne and Jennifer Jason Leigh, is upon you... and it's free?

Horror revivals are all the rage right now. And why shouldn’t they be? Warner Bros. and New Line’s new take on the Ballad of Pennywise in It has dominated the September box office in a big way. So maybe there’s hope yet for Jigsaw and Leatherface this October? (Granted, neither can bust a move like ol’ Pennywise can.) But forget about monsters. Demonic houses and wrecked real estate also wants in on the action, hence Amityville: The Awakening is finally having its release.

Yep, this horror feature from Dimensions Films and Blumhouse Productions has moved around the release calendar more times than a possessed kitchen chair making its witching hour rounds. Yet the Bella Thorne starring horror revival is getting a belated premiere… on Google Play. For free. Interesting, no?

The film will be released for a limited time on Google Play beginning on Oct. 12. Available for free on that platform until its select theaters premiere on Oct. 28, the film reimagines the “true story” of the Amityville House with the wicked windows as a modern day tale of dread. The picture is written and directed by Franck Khalfoun (Maniac) and stars Thorne, the Oscar nominated Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), and Shameless and Gotham’s Cameron Monaghan.

In the film Belle (Thorne) moves with her mother (Leigh) and her brother (Monaghan) into the handsome hamlet of Amityville… only to discover they’re living inside its infamous horror house! Despite her mother saying otherwise, Belle realizes that between “illusion and reality lies evil.” It will have to be a quick epiphany too since the movie is a jaunty 87 minutes of madness.
