One tale of intense survival deserves another one in its follow up, right? Thus enter Adrift, a new movie from Everest director Baltasar Kormákur. The film is a new and non-IP project (imagine that!) that’s also based on a true story about two people who set off together across the Pacific Ocean, only to come up against one heck of a storm. Will they survive it? Couldn’t tell you at the moment, but this story is the subject of the movie, that stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin in its lead roles. Here is everything you need to know.
Have a look at the first trailer for the survivalist story set at sea. Spoilers: it looks intense.
Adrift Release Date
The film boldly opens right in the dead center of the summer heat wave with a June 1 release date.
Here are the official plot details about the picture:
From the director of Everest and starring SHAILENE WOODLEY (Big Little Lies, The Fault in our Stars) and SAM CLAFLIN (Journey’s End, Me Before You, The Hunger Games films), ADRIFT is based on the incredible true story of two young adventurers whose chance encounter leads them first to love, and then to a fight for survival. Setting off on the journey of a lifetime across the Pacific Ocean, Tami Oldham (Woodley) and Richard Sharp (Claflin) are pushed to their limits as they sail directly into one of the most catastrophic storms in recorded history. In the aftermath, Tami awakens to find Richard badly injured and their boat in ruins. With no hope for rescue, Tami must find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved. ADRIFT is an unforgettable story about the resilience of the human spirit and the remarkable power of love. ADRIFT is directed by BALTASAR KORMÁKUR (Everest, 2 Guns, The Deep).
The movie stars Shailene Woodley, the excellent young actress who is probably best known for playing the lead heroine of the Divergent films, but has done superb work in 2011’s Oscar winning The Descendants and currently on HBO with the hit juggernaut series, Big Little Lies. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for both and an Emmy for the latter. She also appeared in the YA hit The Fault in Our Stars. Sam Claflin is meanwhile probably best known for his role as Finnick in The Hunger Games movies, but he also memorably starred opposite Emilia Clarke in the melodramatic weepie, Me Before You. He has also appeared in the Pirates of the Caribbean and Snow White franchises.
The movie also features Jeffrey Thomas, Grace Palmer, and Elizabeth Hawthorne.
