Never let it be said that Hollywood doesn’t love its own mythology. The story of a romance between an ingénue and an industry veteran that sees her fortunes rise as his falls is as old as the business itself. In fact, A Star is Born has been made three times already, telling that exact same plot! So why not a fourth for 21st century sensibilities starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga? Indeed, Warner Bros. is making just such a movie. And at least as judging by the trailer, it certainly looks like it has found its own unique song.
A Star is Born Trailer
Bradley Cooper shows a lot of potential for visual pinache in the first trailer for A Star is Born. In the below tease of things to come, Cooper depicts a surprisingly grounded reimagining of the story of a man whose career falls as his discovery rises to transcendence. Incorporating a natural view of the modern music scene before transitioning into the gloss of Stephanie Germanotta (Lady Gaga) becoming his muse and then his better, it is a new take on a familiar yarn.
A Star is Born Release Date
Cooper and Gaga will try to find a perfect harmony when A Star is Born opens on Oct. 5, 2018. The film was previously scheduled for a May 2018 release date before moving to warmer awards season waters.
A Star is Born Cast and Crew
The film not only marks Lady Gaga’s big screen debut in a leading role, but it will also be Cooper’s first time in the director’s chair. Having made the deal with Greg Silverman, president of creative development and worldwide production at WB, Cooper will enjoys his directorial debut. Additionally, Gaga will be writing and performing new music for the film, which is also a time-honored tradition in Star is Born redos. Intriguingly, despite making positive waves in the industry during her tribute to The Sound of Music at the Oscars in 2015, as well as having starred on American Horror Story under her pop star moniker, for her big screen bow, Gaga is going by her real name, Stefani Germanotta.
In addition to Germanotta and Cooper, the movie also stars Dave Chapelle as a character named Noodles, as well as Sam Elliot, Bonnie Somerville, and Andrew Dice Clay.
The screenplay was written by Will Fetters & Bradley Cooper and Eric Roth. It is based on the story by William A. Wellman and Robert Carson.
A Star is Born Story
The first (and most cynical about its industry) A Star is Born was made in 1937 and starred Janet Gaynor as Esther Victoria Blodgett, aka Vicki Lester, the starlet who changed her name and sold her soul to rise to the top of Hollywood’s hallowed food chain. Frederic March is the man who discovered her before it all went sideways for himself. Next came the most iconic version of the story in 1954, which starred Judy Garland as Vicki and James Mason as Norman. Directed by George Cukor, this one was all prestige. But lest we forget, 1976 brought us the legendarily awful and epically vain version made for Barbara Streisand and few others. Set in the baby booming heyday of the counterculture movement, it was just bad, bad, bad all around. It also starred Kris Kristofferson as the dude.
In the remake A Star Is Born, Cooper plays fading country music star Jackson Maine, who has an affair with Ally, played by Lady Gaga, a singer who is still in the club circuit, and puts her on the big stage. As she becomes a star, his career goes into a nosedive.
The official synopsis is as follows:
A movie star helps a young singer/actress find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.
A Star is Born Music
In true A Star is Born fashion, all the musical numbers will be new originals co-written and produced by Gaga herself.
