When graphic novel I Kill Giants was published in 2008, it earned some much-deserved praise for its portrayal of loss, emotional trauma, and bullying in imaginative, heartwrenching, relatable manner. Now, the graphic novel by Joe Kelly and J.M. Niimura, is getting the feature film treatment and, from the looks of the first full-length trailer, it does its source material justice.
In the movie, Madison Wolfe (The Conjuring 2) stars as protagonist Barbara, a bunny-ear-wearing, Dungeons and Dragons-playing girl who is struggling to determine if the fantasy world of magic and monsters she sees is real, or if it is the dangerous product of her own, trauma-affected mind. Going along with her on this journey is Zoe Saldana playing school counselor Mrs. Mollé; Imogen Poots as Barbara’s older sister, Karen; and Sydney Wade as her new friend.
The film was directed by Danish filmmaker Anders Walter, from a script from original graphic novel author Joe Kelly. I Kill Giants made waves at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, and it’s not hard to see why. This trailer is beautiful, haunting, and scary, and hints towards an on-screen story filled with some powerful emotions.
I Kill Giants hits theaters and on VOD and Digital HD on March 23, 2018.
