28 Months Later Movie Is Unlikely Now, Writer Admits

A film to close off the 28 Days Later trilogy is unlikely now, Alex Garland has revealed.

Alex Garland’s second movie as director (following the astonishing Ex Machina), Annihilation, is heading to theaters next month in the US and to Netflix in the UK. As such, he’s been doing some promotional work for the movie, including an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit.

In said AMA, a question came up about a further sequel to 28 Days Later, which has been in the books for quite some time. Garland penned the first film, and was executive producer on its follow-up, 28 Weeks Later. There had been talk about a trilogy-closer, 28 Months Later, in the years directly after the release of the sequel but things have gone quiet since then. And Garland in a brief response admitted that there were “kind of” plans for a further film, “but doubt it will ever happen.”

It’s not the first time our hopes of getting a third 28 Days film have been shattered. In fact, there’s a pretty long history of doubt over whether the elusive 28 Months Later would ever get made.

28 Days Later director Danny Boyle told MTV while promoting the excellent 2007 sci-fi flick, Sunshine (also written by Garland), that, “There is an idea for the next one, something which would move the story on. I’ve got to think about it, whether it’s right or not.”

Things have gone pretty quiet since then, except for the occasional comment from Boyle or Garland, who seemed optimistic in the first few years after the sequel but has since shared a bit more doubt about the project. By 2010, Garland wasn’t sure the film would be made at all, citing a rights battle between two sides that weren’t interested in negotiating.

“When we made 28 Days Later, the rights were frozen between a group of people who are no longer talking to each other,” Garland told Worst Previews. “And so, the film is never going to happen unless those people start talking to each other again. There is no script as far as I’m aware.”

In 2015, Garland actually seemed more hopeful that the movie would get made – and perhaps even a fourth film.

“We’ve just started talking about it seriously” he told IGN. “We’ve got an idea. Danny [Boyle] and [producer] Andrew [Macdonald] and I have been having quite serious conversations about it so it is a possibility. It’s complicated. There’s a whole bunch of reasons why it’s complicated, which are boring so I won’t go into, but there’s a possibility.”

At the time, Garland said he’d probably return as an executive producer as opposed to writing the film, which he confirmed would be titled 28 Months Later.

“It’s more likely to be 28 Months than 28 Years” he revealed. “28 Years gives you one more place to go. 28 Decades is probably taking the piss.”

Now, it’s more likely to be too much time has passed, and that Garland’s slate of projects is on the sizeable side. We’ll keep you posted if anything changes, though…
