Independent developer Super 91 Studios has announced a new 2D puzzle-platformer called Super III with a cool sci-fi twist. In the game, players control an alien on a quest to rescue human survivors in the aftermath of a massive space war, and the alien uses a warping ability to move around each screen with ease. Taking bits and pieces from games like Super Meat Boy, Super Mario 64, and even a taste of VVVVVV, Super III is one stylish indie you’ll want to keep your eye on next year.
The core gameplay in Super III is said to be inspired by Super Meat Boy, with incredibly precise controls, fast-paced platforming gameplay, and of course, an insurmountable number of hazards to stop you dead in your tracks. The mission setup, on the other hand, is reminiscent of Super Mario 64, with players using portals (a la paintings) to revisit the main levels and collect all of the batteries that each one has to offer. And in true Super Mario 64 fashion, there will also be a handful of hidden batteries for you to uncover as well.
Super 91 Studios has released a gameplay video of Super III in action for your viewing pleasure. If you like what you see, Super III is currently seeking funding on its newly launched Kickstarter page, and you can also vote for the game on Steam Greenlight. The game is expected to launch mid-2015 on PC and Mac, although the developer also has plans for a release on PS4, PS Vita, and Xbox One.
