At the 2019 Evolution Championship Series, Bandai-Namco’s SoulCalibur VI made its debut as one of the nine main games of the show. It was a double-edged sword, sad to say, as it had its finals on Friday, the first day of the event, due to having the lowest turnout. A shame, since it had a really entertaining Top 8.
On Sunday, prior to the Tekken 7 Top 8, SoulCalibur VI’s producer Motohiro Okubo appeared on stage to talk up how great it was to see the game at Evo, then show a trailer. The trailer is for Cassandra Alexandria, the sister of Sophitia and the final DLC character in SoulCalibur VI’s season one.
While many fans considered Cassandra to be a definite and were in no way surprised, they did spike the deal with the reveal that she would be available as early as August 5th!
Okubo made it seem like that was all there was to SoulCalibur as a series. Considering how badly SoulCalibur V performed and damaged the brand, there was talk that SoulCalibur VI would have to be a big success in order for the series to really survive. Looking at its placement on the Evo card, it isn’t the most hopeful situation. Okubo introduced what appeared to be a farewell video in dedication to the series’ many fans.
Instead, we got a trailer for a second season of DLC! Not only are we getting more Create-a-Soul pieces, more gameplay stuff (a parry system?), and four more characters, but one of those characters is a guest fighter! While the other three fighters are shrouded in mystery we know that SoulCalibur VI will give us none other than Haohmaru, the protagonist from Samurai Shodown!
A perfect reveal, considering Samurai Shodown had an impressive showing at Evo 2019. Hopefully, this will be the shot in the arm SoulCalibur VI needs to last at least one more year on the Evo floor.
