In case you were starting to come to terms with Konami’s transition from all-time great game studio to international meme machine, allow us to open up that old wound and salt it nicely.
Konami has announced that they are adding some classic characters from some of their previous games to Super Bomberman R for the Nintendo Switch. They include Vic Viper from Gradius (nice), Simon Belmont from Castlevania (uhh…sure), and Pyramid Head from Silent Hill.
Ok, Konami, let’s have a little heart to heart about that last one.
As we explored in a feature piece that argued Silent Hill 2 featured gaming’s most intelligent story, Pyramid Head was envisioned as a manifestation of a character’s repressed sexual desires and general guilt. He’s essentially a demonic dominatrix who only exists because there is someone out that that is subconsciously begging to receive the punishment that he can provide. It’s no stretch to call him one of gaming’s greatest villains.
Now, while Pyramid Head’s legacy is great enough to survive an appearance in a Bomberman game, the fact that Konami unceremoniously butchered the Silent Hill franchise as part of their nasty divorce from Hideo Kojima does make it seem a little cruel that they would choose to pull a character from that particular property and parody him by inserting him into the overly cute world of Bomberman R.
In other words, this may be as close as we get to seeing Konami program something Silent Hill related into a semi-traditional video game experience for a long time. The world weeps.
If you’re into this kind of thing, the recently announced Konami character skin pack for Bomberman R should be available in the near future. In the meantime, you can enjoy the recently released free update to Super Bomberman R that adds a few new stages and accessories to the game and fixes some of the original version’s lingering technical issues.
