Major video game studios may currently be obsessed with remaking the best games of years gone by, but legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto simply sees no reason to go back and remake classic Mario games.
“I don’t really feel like I want to remake any of them,” said Miyamoto regarding the possibility of Mario remakes during an interview with IGN. “It’s more natural to always create new mechanics and new games.”
To be fair, Nintendo has released some Mario remakes and re-releases over the years and many of them have been quite excellent. Super Mario 64 3DS, for instance, was hailed as arguably the definitive way to experience the classic game while the upcoming remake of Superstar Saga looks to claim the same title. Of course, Metroid Returns just proves that not everyone at Nintendo believes that every Nintendo franchise is immune to the occasional re-visit.
So far as Miyamoto and Mario goes, however, Miyamoto simply wishes to further new gameplay ideas with every major Mario release. That said, Miyamoto isn’t opposed to revisiting certain concepts that once worked and might work again.
“So we’ve been making Mario games for over 30 years, and through that process, we’ve made changes to the games,” said Miyamoto of Super Mario Odyssey. “Some games tended to be a little bit harder, and a little bit harder to play, and then so we teeter back to make it accessible to all kinds of gamers, and then we go back the other way. It’s been kind of a give and take in that way.”
It’s easy to imagine a world in which Nintendo releases HD remakes of several popular Mario games and proceeds to fill a rather large dollar sign swimming pool with the proceeds, but Nintendo has always preferred to maintain the integrity of certain classic titles by preserving them in their original form. Some argue that this helps ensure the value of said titles in the long-term.
