Rain World: Opening Cinematic Shows Off Its Beautiful Design

Yes, it's another indie platformer. But the gorgeous-looking Rain World is well worth checking out...

We’ll be the first to admit that we’re suckers for indie platform games with cute-looking graphics. And while Rain World may have distinct echoes of past genre entries like Limbo or Super Meat Boy, it still looks like a stunning, hand-crafted little game.

It’s set in a strange hand-painted world that looks almost post-apocalyptic: buildings are in ruins and seemingly in the process of being swallowed up by vines and creepers, while weird, mutated creatures roam in the shadows. You play as a pale little critter called a slugcat, who can jump and attack with objects but, otherwise, seems decidedly vulnerable when placed against the huge monsters lurking at every turn. Slugcat’s objective is to find food to keep himself alive, avoid predators, and ultimately find his missing family. Needless to say, the journey won’t be a safe one.

Work on Rain World first began about three years ago, and for its small team of four or five designers, it’s evidently been a labor of love. The finished game’s out on March the 28th for PC and PlayStation 4, and we’re looking forward to finally getting our hands on it. You can see Rain Worlds lovely-looking cinematic below, and beneath that, you’ll find a trailer of the game itself in action.
