Sony has revealed a new attachment for the DualShock 4 controller, which will give the iconic PS4 controller buttons on its back. This, it would seem, is Sony’s answer to the Xbox Pro Controller, and it will serve a similar purpose of giving gamers more options.
This new add-on has a not-very-imaginative name: it’s called the DualShock Back Button Attachment. It will launch on 23 January 2020, and its price tag has been set at $29.99 USD – that translates into sterling as £22.81 GBP, but we’d expect to see that rounded up.
The back button attachment seems to slot naturally into the bottom of the controller, and it has a headphone jack built-in, so you won’t lose the ability to connect up your headset. And if you’re wondering exactly what this new gizmo looks like, point your peepers at the picture atop this page or have a click on the official trailer below…
An official announcement on the PlayStation blog adds glowing statements such as this: “This new attachment elevates your gameplay by delivering more versatility and performance, while maintaining the comfort and feel of the DualShock 4 wireless controller you’ve come to love.”
The two back buttons on this attachment are fully programmable, with players being able to map 16 different functions onto them. It also has an OLED screen, which will display the button assignments that you tell it to (as well as showing your profile).
With the PS5 release date not reaching us until around about this time next year, this late-in-the-day add-on to the PS4 seems like a nice way to tide hard-core gamers over. That release date again is 23 January.
