Niantic Labs have announced that Pokemon Go will feature a special event in celebration of the release of the Detective Pikachu movie

From May 7 to May 17, you’ll be able to participate in a relatively minor Detective Pikachu event. You shouldn’t expect to see much in the way of new modes or incredible new features, but if you play Pokemon Go during that time, you may notice a few references to the upcoming film.

For instance, some of the Pokemon featured in the movie will start appearing in raids. This in and of itself is kind of odd as many of the Pokemon featured in the movie are already in the game, but we’re sure this will make more sense one the mode is underway. You’ll also start seeing more of the Pokemon featured in the movie in the wild, but again, it’s not clear exactly how that’s going to work given the movie’s large cast of Pokemon.

There’s also a chance that you might be “photobombed by a Pikachu in a detective hat” which is not only cute but may give you the chance to actually catch a Pikachu wearing a detective hat. This seems to be the highlight feature of the event, and we imagine that players are going to invest quite a bit of time in trying to catch their own Detective Pikachu

Finally, you’ll earn double XP during this event and will be able to access themed Field Research as well as download new Detective Pikachu-themed avatar items in the Style Shop. No further details were given regarding what specifically you can look forward to as far as new items being added to the game as part of this event.

This might just be the excuse to start playing Pokemon Go that some people have been looking for. It’s hard to imagine that the game will ever again reach the levels of popularity that it enjoyed shortly after its release, but there has been a resurgence of players over the last year or so thanks to the influx of quite a few new features and a tie-in to the popular Pokemon Switch titles
