A new developer called Imaginati is working on a Planet of the Apes video game adaptation that is now set to release on November 21, 2017. Here is the first gameplay trailer for Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier.
Imaginati is actually a subdivision of the performance capture studio responsible for some of the special effects work featured in recent Planet of the Apes films, The Imaginarium. In fact, Imaginati is working out of the same facilities used to develop some of the technology used in the recent Planet of the Apes films.
Last Frontier is reportedly set between the events of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and the recent War for the Planet of the Apes. Specifically, it takes place about a year after Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and follows a renegade group of apes who must make their way through human controlled territory as winter deprives them of resources.
While the apes receive a lion’s share of the game’s focus, players will also have the opportunity to control a band of human characters who philosophically stand in the way of the apes’ journey towards survival. Those opposing views will supposedly come into play throughout the course of the game as players will be forced to make choices which will inevitably harm one party and help the other.
Actually, making choices is about the only thing you’ll have control over during this game. Imaginati intends to treat Last Frontier as more of an interactive movie that only lasts a few hours. While this may remind you of titles like Until Dawn or some of the Telltale titles, Imaginati intends to produce a much more ambitious choice-based narrative that features multiple diverging paths every several minutes. This way, players will truly be encouraged to experience the adventure multiple times.
We’ve heard all of this before, but it really does sound like Imaginati has their heart in the right place. They hired writers before any other major staff members and are looking to avoid certain cliches within this sub genre just as the gamification of choice making.
We look forward to seeing what kind of experience their dedication and ambition will result in.
