Nintendo Adds SNES Games to Switch Online Service

Nintendo has finally revealed the SNES games that are coming to Nintendo Switch Online.

Nintendo Switch Online SNES games

We’ve heard rumors for months now, but Nintendo has finally confirmed they are adding SNES games to the Nintendo Switch Online service.

Yes, those mad lads at Nintendo are finally expanding the Nintendo Switch Online library of classic NES games by adding SNES games to the service’s collection. It all starts with the addition of 20 SNES games to Switch Online’s library of classic titles. Here are the initial SNES games that will be made available via the subscription service:

Wow, that’s a lot of supers. As you can see, that’s a pretty extensive list of games. While it’s not quite the SNES’ greatest hits (or the complete list of games included in the SNES Classic Edition) it’s a pretty great backlog of classic titles that will be made readily available to anyone who is already subscribed to the Nintendo Switch Online service. Better yet, all of those games are being added to the service tomorrow (September 5) at no additional charge.

While the highlights of that list are probably pretty obvious (Link to the Past, Yoshi’s Island, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, etc.), it’s the more eclectic games on the initial list of available titles that have us excited. Stunt Race FX was rightfully highlighted during the reveal video as a game that has not been made available on any other system besides the SNES. Its inclusion here suggests that Switch Online may enjoy a more diverse series of SNES titles

As for when you can expect more SNES titles to be added to the service, that part is unclear. We imagine that the monthly addition of NES games will now be complemented by the addition of some SNES games but the specifics remain up for debate. If pressured to guess, we imagine that SNES and NES games will be added every month, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see Nintendo start exclusively adding SNES games for a while.

Either way, this is yet another reason to own a Nintendo Switch and be a Switch Online subscriber.
