Arc System Works had a pretty eventful run at this year’s Evolution Championship Series. Dragon Ball FighterZ had another big tournament and revealed upcoming characters Janemba and Gogeta. The cult hit Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[st] got a rather large spotlight and led to the announcement of another weirdly-named revision, Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late [cl-r]. BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle got to be on the big Sunday stage and led to the announcement of even more DLC characters, including an under-animated tank with a skull on it.
Anime fighters are weird, man.
Even with all this going on, there was still an empty void in the Evo roster. There was no Guilty Gear game with an appropriately questionable sequel title. We haven’t seen the series since interest petered out with Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 at Evo 2018.
On Sunday, series creator Daisuke Ishiwatari appeared on the main stage to explain why he wasn’t around last year’s show. He’s been working on something very special. While he couldn’t go into too much detail, he did have a big teaser trailer to show off.
Yes, we’re getting a new Guilty Gear game next year! Possibly with stage transitions? Either way, we’ll continue the frenemy relationship of pure-hearted king Ky Kiske and grim scientist-turned-bounty-hunter Sol Badguy as they’re joined by whoever that other guy is.
Based on the last game’s completely bonkers storyline (there was a lady clown pope as the main villain and she isn’t even fightable in-game), it looks like we’ll finally get to see That Man in action. Eventually given the name Asuka R. Kreuz, That Man has been the shadowy “higher power behind everything bad” antagonist since the very first Guilty Gear back in 1998. In the aftermath of Guilty Gear Xrd, Kreuz and Sol Badguy are preparing to finally have their long-awaited battle to the death. Good God, they’ve been taking their time with him.
Anyway, I’m excited! Let’s rock!
