Mortal Kombat 11’s Kombat Pack DLC is halfway out the door. Already, we’ve seen the movie version of Shang Tsung, an updated take on Nightwolf, and the stiff cyber-Austrian brutality of the Terminator. Down the line, we’re going to see Joker, Spawn, and presumably Ash Williams, but in the meantime, our next kombatant is the soaring scream queen Sindel.
Sindel is yet another mainstay of Mortal Kombat, first appearing in Mortal Kombat 3, which revolved around her. While she has shown up every other game or so, she didn’t become interesting or even threatening adversary until her reinvention in Mortal Kombat 9. It’s a reinvention that we’ll continue to see in her Mortal Kombat 11 appearance.
You can see Sindel gameplay, including her Fatal Blow and one of her Fatalities, right here:
Thousands of years ago, Sindel was the queen of the realm of Edenia. Shao Kahn invaded, killed her king, and forced her to be his bride. Sindel died sometime after (presumably suicide). Years later, after the events of Mortal Kombat II, Shao Kahn had Sindel resurrected on Earthrealm as some kind of sorcery-based loophole that allowed him to straight-up invade Earthrealm. Sindel was brainwashed into being at his side until her daughter Kitana got through to her and helped her break the spell. Since then, she appeared regularly in the series as a high-ranking ally to the heroes.
Via time-travel reboot, Mortal Kombat 9 led to a different fate for Sindel. During Kahn’s invasion, he killed Shang Tsung and used his soul to amp up Sindel’s power. She proceeded to kill off most of the heroes singlehandedly (Sub-Zero, Smoke, Kung Lao, Jax, Jade, Kabal, Stryker, and Kitana) but was eventually stopped by Nightwolf, who sacrificed himself to vaporize her. Sindel was reborn in Hell as a revenant, fighting under the orders of Quan Chi.
Now she’s back in the fold, accompanied by a controversial retcon that claims that Sindel betrayed her king from the beginning so she could trade up to Shao Kahn. Yeah, turns out she was evil all along. Then again, she appears to have some kind of banshee ghost accompanying her during certain animations, so we’ll see where that lands.
Sindel will be released for Mortal Kombat 11 on Nov. 26 for players who bought the Kombat Pack. The Joker will be out on Jan. 28 and Spawn on March 17. Also on the day of Sindel’s release, new character skins will be available, such as a 1990s-style Cassie Cage, a vampire Raiden, a Frankenstein’s monster version of Geras, and a mummified Cetrion.
In other Mortal Kombat 11 news, from Nov. 25-30, the game will have a Thanksgiving-themed event called “Deadly Feast.” Basically, it’s boss fights with modifiers based on Thanksgiving food showing up mid-match to affect the fighters in various ways. Apparently, this includes, and I quote, “dive-bombing turkeys.”
Dive-Bombing Turkeys totally played Lollapalooza.
