Konami is considering making a Castlevania game for the Nintendo Switch.
“All I can say is that there is lots of internal discussions going on within Konami regarding what games we can bring to the Nintendo Switch, other than Bomberman, a game which we are well aware of its heritage and how loved it and Castlevania is,” said Konami’s Richard Jones in an interview with Miketendo64. “So much so that Castlevania is getting its own show on Netflix and because of that, we’re hearing a lot of desires from our fans for a new Castlevania series.”
Jones went on to say that they are aware there is demand for such a game, but that “nothing is set in stone as the discussions are still on-going.”
It seems telling that Jones refrains from mentioning exactly what kind of Castlevania game Konami might bring to the Nintendo Switch. While it seems unlikely that Konami would develop a big budget 3D Castlevania adventure given their current philosophy towards game development, some kind of Castlevania collection or modern 2D Castlevania title doesn’t seem too unlikely.
The latter is certainly on the minds of many Castlevania fans. For years, fans have been asking Konami to release a modern revitalization of the NES style of Castlevania games similar to what Capcom did with Mega Man 9 and 10. Considering that Super Bomberman R is a kind of revitalization of the old Bomberman concept, it’s not that unlikely that the studio may consider producing a classic Castlevania adventure.
Of course, it’s also possible that the upcoming Castlevania game could have ties to the Netflix series. That possibility will certainly grow stronger if the Netflix Castlevania series proves to be a hit.
We’re not expecting to see Castlevania for the Switch at E3, but we will be updating you on the project should more information become available.
