Halo Infinite Spiritual Reboot

343 Industries has re-iterated that Halo Infinite will be a spiritual reboot of the Halo series.

“While we plan to introduce important new characters — like the resilient Pilot you already met in the video — this story is the Master Chief’s,” said 343 Industries in a recent blog post. “The universe will continue the continuity of Halo 5 and in that sense contain the adventures that led up to this moment, but in the pursuit of our “spiritual reboot” and the launch of a new console, we also want to make sure that this is a perfect starting point for new players too. This story will mark the beginning of a new chapter and challenge for the Chief, but it will also respect and continue threads that led to this point. If you’ve never played a Halo game before, this will be a great place to jump into the story.”

Previously, 343 has referred to Halo Infinite as essentially being Halo 6. Some people took that to mean that the game would be fairly similar to previous Halo titles, but this new statement raises some doubt regarding Infinite‘s gameplay specifics. Typically, a spiritual title is a game that features different characters, worlds, and plots but is often similar to another game in other respects. A reboot, of course, also suggests a fresh start. Put them together, and you start to get the idea that this game may actually be different from previous Halo titles in certain notable respects.

That idea is supported by another statement Ross made in which she said that 343 learned from the mistakes of the Master Chief Collection and other Halo titles and hope to apply what they’ve learned to Halo Infinite

“There has been a lot of introspective time to really reflect on what [we have] done as 343,” said Ross. “Where have we made mistakes? Where have we hit it right? What does Halo mean to all of us? That [Halo Infinite reveal] trailer we did is what Halo means to the studio…Maybe it took us two games to get there, and I think we’ve done good things and bad things, but what does Halo mean to us? It is about hope, and wonder, and heroism, and humanity, and community, and bringing a community together.”

Now that we know that Halo Infinite will be a launch title for Xbox Scarlett, it does make sense that 343 would reboot the series somewhat and serve as a jumping off point for anyone getting into the next console generation.
