For the past few years, Microsoft has been releasing special 10-year anniversary editions of their beloved Halo games. Halo: Combat Evolved received its anniversary treatment in 2011 and a Halo 2 remaster was the big draw of 2014’s The Master Chief Collection, which collected much of Bungie’s original work on the series in 1080p 60fps.
Well, if Microsoft and 343 Industries were keeping to that schedule, it would mean that Halo 3 is due for its own anniversary edition this year. The conclusion to the original trilogy was released in November 2007.
Many fans have been speculating for the past few days that 343, which has handled the Halo franchise since Bungie’s exit, will indeed unveil Halo 3: Anniversary at this year’s E3, a rumor fueled by the studio’s recent comments on “having a little something” at the show this year. But it’s now been confirmed that a Halo 3 remaster won’t be announced this year.
343 community manager Brian Jarrard responded to speculation on Reddit, saying, “OMG stop. There is no Halo 3 Anniversary.”
That’s about as definitive a statement as you’re going to get. So what’s 343 showing at the Microsoft conference? It won’t be Halo 6, which is in development but won’t be officially announced at the show. Whatever the studio has up its sleeve, it remains a mystery.
