One of the biggest ever changes to Fortnite is coming, and it sounds a lot like we have Apex Legends to thank for it. Epic’s iconic battle royale game is taking a leaf out of its big new rival’s book, with the planned introduction of a respawn system in Fortnite.
Apex Legends‘ inclusion of such a system, which allows players to bring back their fallen comrades during a battle, is one of the major features that set it apart from Fortnite at launch. By adding such a feature, Epic is making clear its intentions to keep up with the competition and adapt to what fans want.
The plans to add a respawn system to Fortnite were announced in an official YouTube video, with Epic Games explaining that Reboot Vans and Reboot Cards will be added to the game. Previously, Epic added an Apex Legends-like ping system to the game not long after Apex legends was released and drew quite a bit of praise for that feature. It’s quite interesting to see Fortnite borrow so heavily from Apex Legends given that there was that whole legal mess regarding them borrowing from PUBG.
Epic Games community manager Nathan Mooney offered this description of the new system, which sounds a lot like the Apex Legends version of respawning:
“After a squadmate has been eliminated, [players will be able to] grab their dropped Reboot Card, and any surviving squadmates can activate it at a van. Once activated, you’ll definitely know, as a beacon and audio cue will be set off, informing nearby players to the reboot in progress and how many players will be arriving. Your squad will appear, one by one, on top of the van – ready to jump back into the match.”
The Reboot Van represents a fairly major overhaul to how Fortnite works, and it will be added to the game with its next big update. It’ll be interesting to see how the community responds.
