Team Ninja has announced that their Final Fantasy fighting game Dissidia Final Fantasy will launch for PlayStation 4 in early 2018.
Here’s a trailer for Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, the PlayStation 4 version of the game:
If you’re just now hearing about the fact that there is a Final Fantasy-themed fighting game made by Team Ninja and are wondering how this game isn’t more well-known, that’s because Dissidia machines haven’t been spotted often outside of Japan. There, however, the game has garnered quite the cult following.
While Dissidia is often referred to as a fighting game, it’s more accurately described as a squad-based tactical experience where fighting game mechanics make up the actual action sequences. It’s a very strange hybrid that utilizes the Marvel vs. Capcom 3v3 team battle system but adds a layer of complexity to the proceedings via an increased emphasis on teamwork on and special attacks.
In many ways, it does feel like a competitive take on recent Final Fantasy combat systems. Of course, part of the game’s draw is its roster of Final Fantasy characters and the inclusion of special attacks based on the Final Fantasy series.
The PlayStation 4 version of the game will retain many of the arcade title’s trademark elements but will add a new story to the game that will play out through special event scenes between fights. That said, Team Ninja has stated that the game will not have a traditional story mode. PlayStation 4 gamers will also be treated to new features such as additional battle rules, offline single-player options, and friends only servers.
Dissidia will be playable at E3 2017, but there is no release date available for the game at this time.
