John and Brenda Romero’s next game is an X-Com-style strategy title called Empire of Sin.
There are seemingly two major hooks to Empire of Sin. The first is its 1920’s prohibition-era Chicago setting. There, you assume the role of an up-and-coming gangster who is trying to get in on the flourishing illegal booze market. While we’ve seen interpretations of that time period countless times in various pieces of entertainment, this game seems to be going for the almost cartoonish over-the-top approach that touches upon the romanticism of that era while still featuring quite a bit of violence and other less-than-savory elements.
Empire of Sin‘s other significant draw is that previously mentioned X-Com-like gameplay. Actually, Empire of Sin‘s gameplay is divided into two parts. The first is a meta-strategy element that requires you to utilize goons to expand your territory by taking out rival gangs and intimidating the locals. This plays out across a map of Chicago which affords you an overhead perspective of the city and your empire.
When it comes time to get your hands dirty, you’ll be able to enjoy Empire of Sin‘s grid combat system which requires you to maneuver your gangsters across various urban battlefields and utilize simple commands (which includes character-specific abilities) to take out the opposition. Again, anyone who is familiar with X-Com will feel right at home with how Empire of Sin‘s combat system works.
