At E3 2019, we got our first look at Elden Ring: a collaboration between Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin and Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki.
“Elden Ring, developed by FromSoftware, Inc. and Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc., is a fantasy action-RPG adventure set within a world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki—creator of the influential Dark Souls video game series; and George R.R. Martin—author of The New York Times best-selling fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire,” reads a leaked description of the game. “Danger and discovery lurk around every corner in FromSoftware’s largest game to-date.”
Unsurprisingly, the game is a fantasy action-RPG, which suggests that the new game will bear more than a few similarities to past FromSoftware offerings. The real thing of note is that Martin has helped construct the game world, meaning that we might see some of that Westeros magic in this new helping. This sounds very promising.
While FromSoftware’s past games have been full of interesting lore and characters, the storytelling has always taken a backseat to the tough-as-nails melee gameplay. If Martin’s involvement means that Elden Ring is taking a more direct approach to storytelling that doesn’t involve reading tons of item descriptions and picking up on visual clues in the environment, this could be the most complete FromSoftware title yet.
Also of note is the mention of this being From Software’s largest game-to-date. That can be interpreted a few different ways given that they could be talking about George R.R. Martin’s involvement, but our bet is on this being an open-world game. Miyazaki previously mentioned he’s interested in making a Red Dead Redemption 2-like experience, so it certainly seems possible that Elden Ring could end up being that game.
