Hideo Kojima‘s strange Death Stranding and the creepiness of deepfake videos have come together for a double dose of weirdness: a YouTube channel called iFake has edited the Death Stranding trailer so that the game’s director, Kojima himself, appears to be playing every role. It is, in its own way, a beautiful thing to behold.
The game, if you’re unfamiliar, normally stars Norman Reedus, with The Walking Dead star acting out the central role. Players guide his character through a dystopian wasteland as Reedus carries a baby around and delivers important parcels to various people. Lots of famous faces pop up along the way, including Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Conan O’ Brien, Edgar Wright, and Guillermo del Toro.
But why would you look at that eclectic mix of actors, celebrities, and film directors when you could be looking at Kojima himself? Here’s the video from iFake that imagines the creator of Metal Gear Solid portraying men, women, and babies in Death Stranding…
We’re sure you’ll agree that this video is a thing of beauty and can be interpreted as a respectful tribute to Kojima’s singular vision that brought Death Stranding to life.
Kojima’s latest creation is already proving to be one of the biggest talking points of the year in gaming, with some players praising its boldness while others are baffled by the very same experience. Our Death Stranding review was a positive one, while Kojima was moved to comment on some of the less loving write-ups.
Whether you love it or hate it, it’s clear that Death Stranding has made an impact on pop culture, and there will be plenty of people hoping that the game’s potential sequel goes ahead. Until then, you can also look forward to movies coming from Kojima Productions in the future. What took Kojima so long?
