BioWare writer Alexis Kennedy confirmed to Eurogamer that he is working on a project related to the Dragon Age franchise.
“There are huge differences between all of that and what I’m working on at BioWare,” said Kennedy on his current role before adding, “which I can now legitimately say is in the Dragon Age franchise although it has been known for a while.”
In truth, it’s really only been suspected that Kennedy was working on a new Dragon Age game. Previously, some believed that he was working with the Dragon Age team on a new project. However, many felt confident that Kennedy was helping pen the next Dragon Age adventure. Kennedy himself acknowledges what a poorly kept secret this has been:
“Notionally it was a secret but, because of who I was working with, everyone who cared knew. And then the day I started, Mark Darrah (executive producer of the Dragon Age franchise) tweeted saying, ‘Welcome to the Dragon Age franchise,’ so I thought, well, I guess that’s official now then.”
Oddly enough, the one party who doesn’t seem ready to confirm a new Dragon Age game is coming is EA. In a statement to IGN, the publisher noted that “it’s a pleasure having Alexis involved with BioWare; we have no new information to share regarding Dragon Age at this time.”
Their hesitancy to spread the good word is likely an indication that a new Dragon Age game is indeed in the works, but is perhaps quite some time away from actually being released. That being the case, it would be irresponsible of them to start hyping a game we may not see for quite some time.
So where does Dragon Age fit in BioWare’s development schedule? It’s difficult to say. We know BioWare is working on a new Star Wars title, a new Dragon Age game, and a mysterious IP. If we had to guess, Dragon Age likely fits in somewhere between the Star Wars game and the IP in terms of its release date.
Regardless, it’s nice to know that BioWare is ready to give the Dragon Age franchise another shot as it currently remains the only “classic BioWare” RPG property the studio is actively working on following Mass Effect’s hiatus announcement and the mysterious fate of Knights of the Old Republic.
