BioWare Discusses a “Theoretical” Dragon Age Sequel

Dragon Age's creative director add fuel to the Dragon Age hype fire.

BioWare’s “secret” work on a new Dragon Age title is quickly becoming one of the worst kept secrets in the industry.

While BioWare has yet to officially confirm that they intend to develop a new Dragon Age game, recent hirings of former Dragon Age contributors and social media statements have long suggested that they are working on some kind of project associated with the series.

Now, BioWare’s Mike Laidlaw has added to the confusion surrounding the “will they or won’t they” development of a new Dragon Age game.

“There is no planned ending for DA. There is an evolving plan that tends to look 2 games ahead or so,” said Laidlaw on Twitter in response to a fan asking if BioWare has already planned an ending for the series. “Thus, I could tell you what -could- be in a theoretical game 5, if there were a theoretical game 4 happening. But I strongly believe that if you try to hold to a rigid plan that is a decade old by the time you reach the end, you are wasting ops.”

In response to a question regarding whether or not Mass Effect would have benefited from a similar flexible development process, Laidlaw noted that he “couldn’t really say, as I only worked briefly on the first [game].”

So what does this mean for the future of the Dragon Age franchise? Well, on its own, this statement could be interpreted as a kind of vague observation regarding BioWare’s general thought process as it concerns the development of future games. However, given that BioWare has been slowly hiring back key Dragon Age contributors over the last several months and executives within the studio have been openly talking about the game more and more, we’d honestly be shocked at this point if we didn’t receive word about a new Dragon Age game sometime in the next year or so.

Should such an official statement be made, we’ll be sure to share it with you at that time.
