Age of Empires 2 is finally getting a Definitive Edition. Here's what you need to know:

Age of Empires 2

Microsoft is finally releasing a definitive edition of Age of Empires 2.

Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition gives the 1999 strategy game a bit of a visual and feature facelift. On the visual side of things, this definitive edition adds 4K Ultra HD graphics to Age of Empires 2, while the game’s original soundtrack will also be fully remastered. As is usually the case with these upgrades, you shouldn’t expect any technological miracles, but they should help bring Age of Empires 2 feel a bit more modern in some welcome ways.

It’s the gameplay side of things that gets us really excited about this definitive edition, though. Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition will add 3 new campaigns to the original title as well as 4 new civilizations. It’s all part of the game’s “The Last Khans” content package.

As is usually the case with these definitive titles, though, it’s the base game that’s the real selling point here. Age of Empires 2 is considered by many to be one of the greatest real-time strategy games ever made. It was never quite as hardcore as titles like Starcraft, its refined gameplay and hours of content made it a hit amongst many who never even considered themselves to be fans of the genre.

At a time when strategy titles are being re-imagined by games like They Are Billions and Frostpunk, Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition will almost certainly be a welcome return to the genre’s glory days for the many who consider the original version of the game to be a candidate for the most important PC games ever made

Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is set to release on November 14 on Steam, Game Pass PC, and Game Pass Ultimate.
