2005’s Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Just Received a New Multiplayer Update

That's nice, but who is updating this game?

Whoever is responsible for saving 2005’s Star Wars: Battlefront 2‘s multiplayer mode has recently released a patch for the game designed to improve certain performance issues.

According to notes posted on the Steam Community page, this patch is designed to improve lobby functionality, properly incorporate Steam names, improve general performance through better ping calculations. Unfortunately, these patch notes make no reference to who is actually going to all this trouble. Fortunately, they should make the resurrected game much more playable than it previously was.

In case you missed the original news, online multiplayer was restored to 2005’s Star Wars: Battlefront 2about three months ago. Previously, all multiplayer servers for the popular online shooter were shut down in 2014 as part of GameSpy’s closure. That is until a post appeared yesterday on the game’s Steam forums which claims that the game’s online multiplayer modes have been resurrected.

Star Wars fans rejoice!” reads the post from a user named Disney (it may or may not be Disney). “Multiplayer support has returned for Battlefront II. Now you can draft your friends to the 501st legion and join up to 64 other players in a heated online battle for control of the galaxy.”

The timing of this update seems far from coincidental. With EA preparing to release the second installment of their revived Battlefront series  – the game’s open beta begins this weekend – it seems that someone has taken it upon themselves to restore the original Battlefront 2 to its former glory.

It’s still unknown who really took the initiative to ressurect the game’s online multiplayer. It’s possible that this is a fan update, but the scope of such a revival suggests that someone official may have indeed restored the game’s functionality incognito. They even ensured the game’s cross-play functionality with Good Old Games works meaning that those who own the title on either Steam or GOG can play the game together.

This is one of those few times that we’ll gladly overlook the details in favor of focusing on the results. For those that never played it, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is considered to be one of the best Star Wars games ever made. Many may tell you that it’s incredible mix of hero powers, ground combat, and space battles makes it the definitive Star Wars online mmultiplayer shooter experience.

By many, of course, we mean us. We’d tell you that. We’d also advise that you purchase and play this game as soon as possible as it has aged remarkably well in all the ways that matter.
