Ted Bundy Talks in True Crime Documentary Series

Conversations With a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes captures the charm and psychosis of an iconic serial killer.

“I haven’t blocked out the past. I wouldn’t trade the person I am, or what I’ve done, or the people I’ve known, for anything,” Ted Bundy has been quoted as saying in multiple sources. “So I do think about it. And at times it’s a rather mellow trip to lay back and remember.” Before he discovered the thrill he got from killing, Bundy was on his way to a career in law or politics, according to Crime Museum’s biography. His young female victims found him a charismatic boy who could really talk. Netflix is set to listen in the upcoming Conversations With a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, according to Deadline.

The four-part docuseries was directed by Joe Berlinger, director of the true-crime investigations Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills, Gone: The Forgotten Women of Ohio, Crude, Wrong ManTony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru, and Whitey: United States of America V. James J. Bulger. He also executive produces Oprah’s Master Class. He was also an executive producer on Oprah’s Master Class. Berlinger is currently directing Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile. Told from the point of view of Elizabeth Kloepfer, the woman who ultimately got Bundy arrested, who will be played by Lily Collins, the feature will star Zac Efron as Ted Bundy.

“What’s one less person on the face of the Earth, anyways?” Bundy famously asked after he confessed to 30 murders in seven states between 1974 and 1978. There may be more victims he did not yet identify. Most informed speculation points to a higher number. In Ted Bundy: Conversations With a Killer, Berlinger presents previously unheard audio from interviews Bundy gave while on death row in Florida.

The series will also give the history of Bundy’s killings. It will get into the media frenzy which surrounded the trials. It will include his in-court marriage to Carole Ann Boone, who was testifying on his behalf. Bundy was jailed for the first time in 1975 for aggravated kidnapping and attempted criminal assault in Utah. Investigators began to tie him to a multiple unsolved homicides in several states. While he was in jail on murder charges in Colorado, he escape twice. He committed three murders before he was recaptured in Florida in 1978. In two separate trials, Bundy received three death sentences For the murders he committed in Florida.

Netflix is also producing the serial killer series Mindhunter from David Fincher. Season 2 will feature characters based on Charles Manson and David Berkowitz. Netflix’s true-crime documentary series Making a Murderer has become a long form documentary standard, prompting the streaming channel to explore it in the docuseries docuseries The Keepers,  about the unsolved killing of a Catholic school teacher nun, and Wild Wild Country about Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh’s movement in Oregon.

Conversation with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes premieres Friday, Jan. 25 on Netflix.
