While it was teased in the last few minutes of the January 17th installment of Sailor Moon Crystal, this upcoming Saturday’s “Act 15: Infiltration / Sailor Mars,” will mark the proper beginning of the Black Moon arc. So, before we dive into the time-traveling terrorist segment of the Sailor Moon franchise, here’s a round-up of all the information we have so far.
The Black Moon arc is so named for the Black Moon Clan, a terrorist faction from the 30th Century who seek to take down the future city of Crystal Tokyo. Meanwhile, here in the present, a tiny, pink-haired, five-year-old girl who not only bears a striking resemblance to Usagi, but claims her name as well, comes after her, demanding the Silver Crystal. The Black Moon Clan come to our time in pursuit of this girl, distinguished from Usagi with the nickname Chibi-Usa (Little Usagi), who in turns comes under the reluctant protection of Sailor Moon.
The Black Moon family hits the internet on February 7th. In the meantime, enjoy this shiny trailer with its… well… mildly uncomfortable Elektra Complex oriented content. Well, manga Chibi-Usa was always a little creepy on this front.
In addition to the Black Moon Clan and Chibi-Usa, this arc marks the debut of the mysterious Sailor Pluto, who guards the Space-Time Door. A fan favorite, Sailor Pluto is notorious for heralding the occurrence of weirdness in the Sailor Mooniverse, and given that Crystal is adapting the manga rather closely, we can expect more development on Pluto in this arc than was seen in Sailor Moon R, namely her unrequited longing for a certain king of the future.
While continuing the mineral-themed naming, the Black Moon Clan are named for more common minerals than, say, the Shitenou of the Dark Kingdom, with names like Demande and Saphir, derived from diamond and sapphire, respectively. Here are the character designs for the major Black Moon characters, Prince Demande, Saphir, Esmeraude, and Rubeus.
As for the voice talent debuting in this arc, the new cast members are as follows:
Chibi-Usa: Misato FukuenSailor Pluto: Ai MaedaPrince Demande: Mamoru MiyanoSaphir: Tsubasa YonagaEsmeraude: Houko KuwashimaRubeus: Hiroki Takahashi
